6000 SERIES FORMULA 1 LIMITED EDITION (1999) – CH1116

In 1999, Bernie Ecclestone (in effect, the CEO of Formula 1) commissioned 500 samples of the TAG Heuer 6000 chronograph to mark the 50th year of the Formula 1 World Championship. The dials were marked “1950 to 1999 Limited Edition” on the left, with the F1 logo on the right. Not originally sold to the public, the watches were given out to sponsors and partners of Formula 1.

This watch has the following features:

– Swiss-made TAG Heuer quartz chronograph movement with full chronograph and date functions

– Unique black chequered dial with luminous applied hour markers and triple-register layout

– Stainless steel case measuring approximately 38mm excluding crown, with brushed and polished finishes

– Unidirectional rotating bezel with engraved numerals, luminous bezel pearl at 12 O’Clock

– Solid steel caseback engraved with the Formula 1 50th Anniversary logo and limited edition number

– Original stainless steel bracelet with signed folding clasp (fits up to ~7.25 inch wrist)

– Signed screw-down crown and chronograph pushers

– Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal

In the 1990s, the TAG Heuer 6000 Series stood at the top of the brand’s lineup. Positioned above the 2000 and 4000 Series, it represented the pinnacle of TAG Heuer’s pre-LVMH design and engineering – combining refined aesthetics, premium materials, and everyday functionality in a way no other model in the catalogue did. Among all 6000 Series references, this particular piece, the CH1116, is especially significant. Produced in 1999 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Formula 1 World Championship, it was commissioned by Bernie Ecclestone and issued in a strict run of just 500 pieces. These watches were never offered for public sale but were instead gifted exclusively to Formula 1 sponsors and partners, making it one of the rarest and most historically important TAG Heuer releases of its era. The CH1116 also marks a rare crossover between TAG Heuer’s luxury flagship line and its Formula 1 branding, typically reserved for a completely separate collection, further underlining its unique status within the brand’s history.

This example features a perfectly proportioned 38mm Stainless Steel case with integrated lugs and TAG Heuer’s signature 6000 Series design language. The dial is finished with a subtle black chequerboard pattern, referencing the sport’s iconic finishing flag, and is complemented by recessed sub-dials and the F1 insignia wish dashes of colour. The chronograph function includes 1/10th second, 30-minute, and small seconds counters, along with a date window at 4 o’clock. Inside is a reliable TAG Heuer quartz chronograph movement which has just been serviced. The watch wears comfortably on its original and unique stainless steel bracelet and remains a versatile, understated tribute to Formula 1 heritage. There is of course a utilitarian sapphire crystal glass and 200 meters of water resistance.

This piece is in overall excellent condition, showing very minor signs of wear consistent with age. It has just been completely overhauled and serviced, a meticulous process that has restored it to the highest possible standards of aesthetics and performance. All functions work well with no faults,they are working perfectly. At this price point, this watch offers an unbelievable value proposition. It is more than just a watch, it is a piece of horological history.

Along with the watch itself comes the original box and papers, service record and even the original carrier bag.
